Active at Altitude is delighted to announce the 7th year of our series of running and conditioning camps created specifically for adult women. These camps are an amazing opportunity to train and be active in one of the top training areas in the world, as well as learn from inspiring and experienced women athletes and coaches. These camps are for you if you are an experienced runner and need to rekindle your enthusiasm for running, or want to take your running to the next level, or if you are looking to train for your first 10K, half marathon or marathon – these camps will give you the tools and inspiration you are looking for, and more! Our camps inspire you on every level, physically, mentally, and spiritually. These camps do sell out, so we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment!

Our great friend Melody Fairchild will join us for the May and September camps – Melody is current US National Masters Champion at 5K, 10K, 15K, and half marathon trail, and is still arguably the best female high school athlete the US has ever produced – see more details on the camps below!

Who are these camps for?

There are 2 camp levels:

Level I – this camp is for you if you can already run a 10K distance at 10 min/mile pace or faster (at your home elevation)

Level II – this camp is a more advanced level, running longer and at higher elevations – this camp is for you if you can already half marathon distance at 10 min/mile pace or faster (at your home elevation).

Each camp contains a blend of activities specifically designed to raise your conditioning level, particularly focused on running. Camps are residential in Estes Park, CO, a town ideal for training at altitude in an amazing environment. Estes Park was a summer camp location back in the 1800′s for Arapaho – the area was also visited by Apache and Ute tribes. Each day of the camp is creatively designed to challenge and inspire, primarily running on trails & roads in and around Estes Park. Elite level athletes have been benefiting from the effects of altitude training for years – now you can too! Come and find out why athletes that come and train with us return home with renewed enthusiasm, motivation, and knowledge,  and set PR’s! See information on the benefits of training at altitude here. Each camp is limited to 10 runners maximum to ensure personal attention and the best possible experience for you as a runner.

Each camp includes activities and sessions from the following:

  • trail runs of varying length and intensity
  • speed work or hill work
  • interval or tempo sessions
  • guided climbing
  • hiking
  • pool or aqua running
  • flexibility
  • Essentrics, floor or yoga session
  • running form and injury prevention
  • workshops on visualization / self belief / nutrition / motivation / race preparation/ goal setting / and more…
  • camp journals – workshops will include creating action plans to incorporate learning and commitments to take away
  • video review of running technique
  • a major focus on goal setting with one to one sessions with Camp Director – everyone leaves with a goal and detailed action plan and support network to achieve that goal

Each camp includes accommodation (2 women per room sharing in a double room – 4 in bunk room – single room options available), all meals, water and juices, all sessions, group transport, journals, towels, bedding and a women’s cut tech tee shirt. Food will be primarily vegetarian..special diets can be catered for. Camps start at 4.00 pm the first day, and finish at 12.00 pm on the last day. Here is a typical day’s schedule:

Level I camp – May 19-26 – BOLDERBOULDER

This 8 / 7 night day camp culminates in running one of the biggest, and best, 10K road races in the USA, the BOLDERBOULDER. The race takes place on Memorial Day, May 25 2015. This race usually has over 50,000 runners take part, and has a big atmosphere, and big heart! See details on the race here – you will need to register individually for the race.
The camp will focus on preparing for the race, both physiologically and psychologically. A key part will be learning how to pace yourself to enable you to have your best 10K race experience at altitude, so pacing will form a major part of the group runs during the camp (Boulder is at 5340 feet above sea level)

IMG_1479Exciting news – our great friend Melody Fairchild will join the camp for one morning (day tba) – Melody will join in the group morning run, share breakfast, be open to questions about her training & racing, and lead a floor session in CFR (Cortical Field Re-education, a movement awareness discipline – see more details about CFR at this link) – Melody is a three-time winner of the BOLDERBOULDER citizens race, her best time as a high school runner would have placed her second in the women’s elite race that same day! We are blessed to have Melody be a part of this camp!

Level I camp – August 30 to September 6

This 8 / 7 night day camp takes place in early September, a beautiful time of year in the mountains. The camp consists of a progressive series of runs, culminating in an epic endurance run, usually 10 miles in length, that will possibly be the hardest run you will ever have done, while also the most rewarding!

melody-side-2-175Exciting news – our great friend Melody Fairchild will join the camp for one morning (day tba) – Melody will join in the group morning run, share breakfast, be open to questions about her training & racing, and lead a floor session in CFR (Cortical Field Re-education, a movement awareness discipline – see more details about CFR at this link) – Melody is a multiple US National Masters Champion at a variety of distances currently. She is a hugely inspirational woman runner, and a great role model for how to recover and hit highs after experiencing lows in life. We are blessed to have Melody be a part of this camp!

Level II Camp July 12 – 19

IMG_3394This is a more intense camp than the Level I camps featured above. This camp will follow similar a schedule to the camps above, with runs that are at a higher and more advanced level. Content will be as for Level I camp with the following additional content:

  • At least one run / hike to over 11,000 feet to reach a mountain summit with incredible views
  • A night run on a graded dirt road
  • The longest run may include a crossing of the Continental Divide – weather dependent
  • A deeper focus on goal setting and action plans

Camp starts at 4.00 pm on the first day, and finishes at 12.00 pm on the last day.

Who is this for?

This camp is for athletes that have already attended at least one previous Active at Altitude Level I camp, and/or can run at least half marathon distance at 10 min / mile pace or better at home elevation. If you think you may be suitable for this camp, please contact us to check on your current status and suitability. Spaces are limited to 10 for this camp – we advise booking early to secure places.

Coaching Staff

TC& JC on Flat TopCamp Director is Terry Chiplin, fitness and life coach, and owner of Active at Altitude. Terry has over 20 years experience working and inspiring athletes of all abilities, from Olympic marathoner to a runner completing their first 5K! Terry is also a coach for Revolution Running based in Boulder.  Terry combines talents with wife Jacqueline Chiplin – Jacqueline is assistant coach, chief cook, and “Oracle” for the camps – Jacqueline has an extensive running background, and has been coaching runners for nearly 10 years. Getting here

The nearest airport is Denver International (DIA) – the airport is a 1.5 hour drive away from Estes Park. We provide transport during the camp, so you don’t need to bring your own. We recommend a local shuttle service that can pick you up at DIA, and drop you at the camp door here in Estes Park. They will also make the same run in reverse at camp end. To arrive in time for camp start, use the 1.00 pm shuttle from DIA. For return to DIA, use the 1.00 pm shuttle again. See more details and to book at Estes Park Shuttle.
